World
In the world of Megabonk, there are currently 3 playable maps. Which can be selected before playing.
General Context & Map Structure
- Megabonk uses a map / tier structure: maps are themed areas (Forest, Desert), each has 3 tiers. Except Graveyard as it only has one tier.
- To unlock the Desert map, you must reach the second stage of Forest Tier 2 with a specific character (CL4NK).
- Each stage has a boss you must defeat (before a time limit or else a “Final Swarm” of enemies escalates) to access the teleporter to the next stage within a tier.
- The maps have thematic and aesthetic variation to reflect their biome (e.g. environment, enemy types, background visuals) so each feels distinct.
Forest
"A green place full of trees, birds and great vibes. Also everything will try to kill you."
Description
The Forest has a more “lush,” green setting: the typical jungle/woodland feel. Trees, foliage, and natural terrain dominate. Full of natural obstacles such as trees, rocks and various medieval structures which act as collision points for the player and the enemies. Thanks to it's design, the enemies may blend more into the environment, making visibility and movement more meaningful. The background and “walls” or map edges might be tree lines, forest ridges, or dense vegetal growth to reinforce the forest aesthetic.
Gameplay Feel & Challenges
- Because it’s the first and only playble map at the start, the difficulty in the Forest is relatively low in an early game. In the first waves of hostile NPCs which you always encounter are simple goblins which can be killed in one hit with all of the starting weapons.
- The forest is the “gateway” biome. Meaning you will learn the movement, mechanics, explore, and unlock upgrades before unlocking more demanding environments and challenges
Progression & Bosses
- Each forest stage ends with a boss fight. Once defeated, a teleporter or portal appears (if your tier allows moving forward) which lets you advance to the next stage.
- To reach the Desert map, reach the second stage of the Forest Tier 2 using CL4NK that unlocks access to the Desert map which can now be selectable in the main menu before a new run.
Mini bosses
- Chunkham The Terrible (spawns once in Tier 1 and Tier 2)
- Stone Golem (spawns once in Tier 1 and Tier 2)
Bosses
- Lil Bark (Tier 1 final boss)
- Chadbark (Tier 2 final boss)
- Bark Vader (Tier 3 final boss)
Desert
"A hot, dry and dusty place."
Description
The Desert map contrasts the forest. more open space, sandy ground, fewer plants, heat haze, dunes or rock outcroppings. You might see cactus-like vegetation, cracked earth, dust clouds, tumbleweeds, or ruins that break the monotony of sand. The background might feature horizons with mesas, dunes, or distant rock formations to give a sense of vastness.
Gameplay Feel & Challenges
- The Desert map is more challenging. Once unlocked, you’ll face tougher enemies, more aggressive spawns, and more open space which can make you exposed.
- Visibility might be better in many cases (fewer obstructions), but that also means enemies can approach from more angles.
- Terrain in desert may provide fewer hiding places or cover, making positioning and mobility more important.
- Occuring Sandstorm is a special environmental/event condition that happens during runs. It's main purpose is to descrease players vision to minimum for a brief moment. Hiding enemies unless they are very close and makes exploration and navigation in the terrain much harder - if you manage to fully charge a Charge Shrine while a sandstorm is active, it counts toward the quest for the Tornado. The game ensures at least one sandstorm per run on the Desert
Progression & Bosses
- Same as forest, each desert stage ends in a boss fight. You defeat the boss, use the teleporter (if conditions met) to progress to another Stage
- Desert tiers follow the same unlocking logic: beat Stage 1 in Desert Tier 1 to unlock Tier 2; beat Stage 2 in Tier 2 to unlock Tier 3.
Mini bosses
- Sand Golem (spawns once in Tier 1 and Tier 2)
- Scorpionussy (spawns once in Tier 1 and Tier 2)
Bosses
- Anubis (Tier 1 final boss)
- Anubruh (Tier 2 final boss)
- Juge Anubis (Tier 3 final boss)
Graveyard
"The home of ghosts and other spooks."
Description
Gameplay Feel & Challenges
Progression & Bosses
- Only one tier at the moment, but the round is 16 minutes instead of 10 minutes.
- Slight deviation from the standard, as it only has two stages
Mini bosses
- Calcium's Dad (Spawn at 13 minutes left, 9 minutes left and 3 minutes left)
- Ghostham the Dead (Spawn at 13 minutes left, 9 minutes left and 3 minutes left)
- Note: The boss that spawns the most is dependent on which one you encountered first. Say Calcium's Dad is the first one at 13 minutes, then the next will be Ghostham the Dead then Calcium's Dad again. And vice versa if Ghostham the Dead is spawned first
Bosses
- Jeff (1st boss that you manually spawn)
- Mike (2nd boss that you manually spawn)
- Ted (3rd boss that you manually spawn)
- Gary (4th boss that you manually spawn)
- Spooky Steve (Spawns in the first and second crypt)
